Your Reputation Precedes You

Your Reputation Precedes You

A few months ago, I had a conversation with a company about a potential opportunity. We couldn’t agree on terms, so we went our separate ways—no big deal.

I didn’t think much of it until their name came up in an unrelated discussion. The feedback? Not great. Word gets around, and in this case, it wasn’t doing them any favors.

On the other hand, I know professionals with stellar reputations. They deliver on their promises, treat people well, and maintain strong relationships. As a result, doors open for them. People want to work with them, refer them, and support their success.

How Your Reputation Affects Your Business Connections:

  • Opportunities Follow Trust – If people respect you, they’ll recommend you for roles, projects, and partnerships.

  • Burned Bridges Stay Burned – Poor treatment of others can limit your future options, often in ways you won’t see coming.

  • Your Network Does the Talking – Whether you realize it or not, people share their experiences with you. A strong reputation works for you, while a bad one works against you.

Moral of the Story:

People talk. Your reputation isn’t just about what you say—it’s about what others say when you’re not in the room. Guard it well, and it will open doors. Ignore it, and it might close them.
